Project, Christi’s Work Center

Saturday, June 22, 2013

A few months back Christi had mentioned she would like to have a better place as her work station.  She has been working from just a fold down 6’ table.  It had no storage and had too much “give” for her stamping.  We talked about it and looked at some idea’s on Pinterest and looked in stores.  We ended up coming up with our own ideas and drew it out on paper.  The following pictures is the work in progress of building the desk and the finished product.

I made it mostly out of 3/4” Birch plywood and these first pictures are of me assembling the basic framing.  I used a method of fastening called “Pocket Screw Joints”.

I made it with a solid back and both sides have two adjustable shelves and the front inside also has 4 adjustable shelves along with two pull out drawers.  After everything was assembled it was time to start painting.

I used High Gloss black Oil base paint and put two coats on it.

Next I flipped it on it’s side and was ready to paint the back side.  Christi had seen an idea about Magnetic Paint on a blog sight and decided she would like me to try it.  So I painted two coats on the back side using the Magnetic Paint and then once it was dry I painted the top coat with what is called Chalk Board Paint.  It makes it so you can write on it with chalk or chalk markers and then erase it.

Last I painted the trim with High Gloss White paint.

I then made the top out of two sheets of 3/4” particle board and then covered it with Formica top to finish it off.

Here is her finished project.  Notice how she has posted paperwork on the magnetic painted side and has filled up the shelves with all her goodies.  She just loves it and really enjoys working at her new work station.

She liked the magnetic and chalk board paint idea so well that I made another small display board for her out of and old window screen.  We installed it on our wall in her workroom.

Note from Christi:  “I am so spoiled, Thanks Hon for all you do for me!”
